City of Roswell

The city of Roswell is located just 20 miles north of Atlanta on the Chattahoochee River and was originally part of Cobb County and is currently the 6th largest city in Georgia.

Rich history is abundant in Roswell. Evolving from a Cherokee Nation to a textile mill town at the hands of Roswell King had tremendous impact on the town. Being sent to investigate business possibilities for the Bank of Darien, Roswell King saw such potential in the land that he and his sons returned in the mid-1830´s to build a textile complex that would become the Roswell Manufacturing Company in Cobb County. As people came to work in the mill, the town grew and Roswell was incorporated in 1854.

As part of the Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War, General William T. Sherman´s troops arrived in Roswell seeking a way to cross the Chattahoochee River and advance upon Atlanta. At this time, Sherman authorized the destruction of the mills, however, the homes and other buildings were saved. One historic mill was rebuilt after war and is currently being used to house shops and a special events establishment. The original ruins are designated as a historic site and reside nearby.

The shift in Roswell´s image from textile mill town to small suburban community began in 1900. After the Great Depression, Roswell began to bounce back economically in 1932 after merging with Fulton County. Currently, its location on Georgia Highway 400 has attracted corporate headquarters, high tech businesses and light industry. Roswell is a highly desirable place for families due to the educational and cultural advantages. Roswell has also maintained its small town ambiance and quality of life for its residents.

"Roswell is a family oriented community that respects the natural environment, protects its historic character and celebrates its culture."
